Two claw hammers, a stnraadd weight one and a smaller, lightweight one. A wonder bar (it's a flat crowbar about 12-15 long with a hook shape at one end). A multi-bit screwdriver, preferably one with a ratchet. A set of pliers needle-nose, pipe-grip with slip-joint, blunt-nose with wire cutter, and locking. A hacksaw with extra blades. A set of files, both wood and metal. A 25 measuring tape. A set of adjustable crescent wrenches three sizes are plenty. An awl (like a screwdriver, but with a point on it). A 3/8 electric drill and set of titanium-coated bits up to 3/8 , plus a set of spade bits up to 1 1/2 (for wood). An electric jigsaw, with a complete set of blades for different materials. A set of chisels of different widths. A center punch and nailsets. Look for sets, look for quality tools that will stay in good shape.

Try to head up to Aosta Valley. It's just north of Torino. It's right on the French/Swiss boarder and is so inlrbdiecy beautiful.I can't think of any B&B's up there off the top of my head, but I know there are a few.
